Ingredients
For the Steaks:
1.5 lbs lean ground beef
1/2 cup breadcrumbs (or crushed crackers)
1 large egg
1/4 cup milk
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
Salt and black pepper to taste
1 tbsp olive oil (for searing)
For the Tomato Gravy:
1 large yellow onion, sliced into rings
1 large green bell pepper, sliced into strips
1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes (with juices)
1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp Italian seasoning (or dried oregano)
Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
1. Form the Patties: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently with your hands until just combined. Shape the mixture into 4 to 6 thick, oval patties.
2. Sear the Steaks: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the patties for about 2 to 3 minutes on each side until a deep golden-brown crust forms. (They do not need to be cooked through at this stage). Transfer the seared patties to the bottom of your slow cooker.
3. Layer the Vegetables: Layer the sliced yellow onions and green bell pepper strips directly on top of the beef patties in the slow cooker.
4. Prepare and Pour the Gravy: In a medium bowl, whisk together the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Pour this mixture evenly over the beef and vegetables.
5. Slow Cook: Cover the slow cooker and cook on Low for 5 to 6 hours (or on High for 3 hours) until the meat is fork-tender and the gravy has thickened and absorbed the rich beef flavors.
6. Serve: Spoon the hot steaks onto plates and generously smother them with the tender onions, peppers, and rich tomato gravy. Excellent served over mashed potatoes, steamed rice, or egg noodles.
