This traditional family dish is a testament to how humble ingredients can create incredible flavor. It features layers of tender potatoes and deeply caramelized onions, cooked low and slow for a rich, savory finish.
Ingredients
• 5-6 large potatoes, peeled and sliced into rounds (about 1/2 inch thick)
• 3 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
• 3 tablespoons butter or lard, melted
• 1 cup beef or vegetable broth
• Salt and black pepper to taste
• Optional: A pinch of dried thyme or rosemary for extra aroma.
Instructions
1. Prepare the Onions
In a large skillet over medium heat, melt one tablespoon of butter. Add the thinly sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10–15 minutes until they are soft and golden brown.
2. Layer the Slow Cooker
• Lightly grease the inside of your slow cooker.
• Place a layer of potato rounds at the bottom.
• Top with a generous layer of the caramelized onions.
• Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with a decorative layer of potatoes on top, as seen in image_13.png.
3. Season and Add Liquid
• Whisk the remaining melted butter into the broth along with salt and pepper.
• Pour the mixture evenly over the potatoes and onions.
4. Slow Cook
• Cover and cook on Low for 6 to 7 hours or on High for 3 to 4 hours.
• The dish is ready when the potatoes are completely tender and the edges have begun to brown beautifully, as shown in image_13.png.
5. Finish and Serve
For the crispy, browned tops seen in the photo, you can carefully place the slow cooker crock (if oven-safe) under the broiler for 3–5 minutes before serving. Enjoy this comforting heritage dish as a hearty side or a standalone dinner.
