This quick, sugar-free breakfast bowl combines protein-rich cottage cheese with juicy, dark sweet cherries for a naturally sweet start to your morning. Swirled with fruit juices and folded together to look like a decadent dessert, it is a healthy, kid-approved staple that requires zero cooking time.
Ingredients
The Base: 2 cups full-fat or 2% cottage cheese
The Fruit: 1.5 cups fresh or frozen dark sweet cherries (pitted and halved)
Flavor Boosters: 1 tsp vanilla extract, 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
Optional Mix-ins: 1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans, 1 tbsp chia seeds
Instructions
Step 1: Prep the Cherries
If using frozen cherries, let them thaw completely in a small bowl. Do not drain the pooling juices—these will be used to create the beautiful pink swirls throughout the dish. If using fresh cherries, crush a few slightly with the back of a fork to release their natural juice.
Step 2: Season the Cottage Cheese
In a medium mixing bowl, combine the cottage cheese, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon. Stir well until the vanilla and cinnamon are evenly distributed through the cheese.
Step 3: Fold in the Mix-ins
Gently fold in the chopped nuts and chia seeds if you are using them to add an extra layer of crunch and healthy fats.
Step 4: Create the Cherry Swirl
Add the cherries along with all of their released juices into the bowl. Using a spatula, fold the cherries into the cottage cheese mix only 2 to 3 times. You want to leave distinct streaks of vibrant red and pink syrup marbled throughout the white cream rather than blending it into a solid color.
Step 5: Garnish and Serve
Spoon the mixture into serving bowls. As shown in image_13.png, ensure plenty of whole, glossy cherries rest right on top to give the dish its appealing, sundae-like appearance. Eat immediately or chill in the fridge for 10 minutes to let the flavors meld.
