• 1 small onion, chopped
• 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
• 1 can (10.5 oz / 300 g) cream of mushroom soup
• 1/2 cup milk
• 1 tsp salt (or to taste)
• 1/2 tsp black pepper
• 1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional)
⸻
Instructions
1. Preheat oven
Preheat to 190°C (375°F). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
2. Cook the beef
In a skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef with chopped onion until browned (about 7–9 minutes).
Drain excess grease and season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder if using.
3. Mix the sauce
In a bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup and milk until smooth.
4. Layer the casserole
• Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the dish.
• Add half of the cooked beef.
• Spoon half of the soup mixture over the top.
• Sprinkle with 1 cup cheese.
Repeat the layers with remaining potatoes, beef, soup mixture, and top with the remaining cheese.
5. Bake
Cover tightly with foil and bake for 45–55 minutes (until potatoes are tender).
Remove foil and bake 10–15 minutes more, until the cheese is melted and lightly golden.
6. Rest & serve
Let rest 5–10 minutes before slicing and serving.
